Kathmandu — Rubi Kumari Thakur, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Shram Sanskriti Party, has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, becoming one of the youngest individuals in the world to hold the position.
The decision was made during a meeting of the House of Representatives held on Friday, where a proposal to appoint Thakur as Deputy Speaker was passed by a majority vote. Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced the result.
According to official figures, a total of 264 MPs were present during the voting. Among them, 229 voted in favor of Thakur, while 5 voted against her. Meanwhile, 22 MPs remained neutral.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) had also fielded Saraswati Lama as a candidate for the post, who secured only 5 votes.
At just 28 years old, Thakur has become one of the youngest Deputy Speakers globally. She was elected to Parliament under the proportional representation system from the Shram Sanskriti Party.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s parliamentary history, highlighting the growing participation of young leaders in key political roles.
